Church pews discuss workload

A medium-sized church in a large metropolitan city was known far and wide for its Bible-based preaching.

The church's members loved God with all their hearts, and they encouraged the pastor to continue boldly proclaiming God's Word.

All of the church's members enthusiastically threw themselves into God's work. "I'm so proud of the way everyone works together to fulfill their roles in this church!" exclaimed the pastor.

Even the church's furniture and other inanimate objects worked tirelessly to advance God's kingdom. "Church Pews, Pulpit, Piano and Organ all go far above the call of duty to minister to the Lord, too," said the pastor.

Pulpit enjoyed a prominent position at the front of the church. "I thank the Lord every single day that He allows me to hold the Bibles while the pastor preaches the sermons," Pulpit said. "It's a tremendous honor."

Piano and organ were proud of their musical contributions to the church. "We are certainly noteworthy," piano bragged.

"We do have the keys to the music of the worship services," echoed organ.

Church Pews did not agree about the amount of work they shared. Prior to one Sunday evening service, Front Row Church Pew and Back Row Church Pew discussed their workload.

"It's great being at the front of the church," said Front Row Church Pew. "Normally, only a few people sit on me during the services. On holidays and other special occasions, my workload is a bit heavier, though."

"My workload is heavier than yours for almost every service," complained Back Row Church Pew. "For some reason, I'm a lot more popular than you are. For most services, I'm jam-packed and I don't have a square inch of extra space to spare. In fact, for many services, my twin brother, Back Row Church Pew Number Two, is also filled to capacity."

"I wonder why you're more popular than me!" exclaimed Front Row Church Pew.

"One reason," shared Back Row Church Pew, "is that according to some people, the preacher talks too loudly."

"Those people are wrong," sighed Front Row Church Pew. "Some of the people who sit on me say they can barely hear him because he speaks so softly!

"A couple of them complain about one of the brothers in the ‘Amen Corner' using a little extra volume, but other than that my job is pretty cool."

"You're right about that," agreed Back Row Church Pew. "One of the brothers who used to sit in the Amen Corner moved to the back row because during one service he shouted ‘Amen' so loudly that he upset himself!"

Of Cabbages and Kings

In preparing for revival at South Haven Church of the Nazarene next month, I was reading John Wesley's sermon, "The Most Important Question."

Wesley speaks of the philosophy that if a person of low station, a commoner, poor, uneducated, would try to talk about kings and kingdoms and things far above him, he would struggle to find the words because they would be unfamiliar to him.

He wouldn't know the language to use to describe what he experienced in association with the higher station of life, nor would he have the understanding of the things he might see or experience in relation to them to talk easily of them. Anything he might say, he would struggle to find the words to describe.

If the king, himself, or a prince, however, were to talk about such things, he would be able to speak freely about them because of his familiarity with those same topics and associations.

So it is with us who are so far below the Kingdom of God. We're unable to express ourselves well because what we see, and learn, and taste and experience is so far above us we don't even know the words to use to describe it.

Yet, Jesus, who is of that Heavenly Kingdom, can speak freely and clearly about such things. It's home to Him. He speaks of what He knows.

Doesn't it make sense then, that when an "expert" on the subject, someone who has been a part of that Heavenly Kingdom all His life (forever!), tells us what that Kingdom is like and how we can be a part of it, that we listen to Him?

And doesn't it make sense that we should also believe Him because He knows what He's talking about? He has been there. It's familiar to Him. It's His hometown.

I pray the Lord will help us to realize that He speaks the truth because He is the Truth. He knows what the truth about Heaven is because it's His home. Let's do our best to listen.

This Will We Do

Scripture: Hebrews 6:1-3 Therefore leaving the principles of the doctrine of Christ, let us go on unto perfection; not laying again the foundation of repentance from dead works, and of faith toward God, Of the doctrine of baptisms, and of laying on of hands, and of resurrection of the dead, and of eternal judgment. And this will we do, if God permit.

Text: Hebrews 6:1 Therefore leaving the principles of the doctrine of Christ, let us go on unto perfection;

Greetings in the name of Jesus:

How far have we come in our exploration of the experience of Holiness?

What has God shown us in the Scripture about the place that Holy living has in His grand design for our lives?

We see,

(1) That holy character was God’s purpose in creating us;

(2) That man lost something essential in the Fall and is now born with a spirit of antagonism to God;

(3) But, God has provided a way for man to be freed from such indwelling SIN;

(4) That the method is through a second, instantaneous work of grace;

(5) And, that this work of grace is God’s will for all who are His redeemed children.

We come now to ask the question, How shall we enter in?

As the Holy Spirit leads us into the experience, what steps must we take and by what signs shall we know that we are making progress toward our goal of HEART HOLINESS?

This is the real purpose of all our preceding Bible study of the truth.

Our better understanding of divine things is not an end in itself.

We study in order to show our selves approved unto God.

The words themselves are only road signs in the highway of eternal life.

We seek to understand the truth of Holiness more clearly in order that we may enter in more quickly, or that we may aid others to do so.

How can we be SANCTIFIED WHOLLY?

How can we guide our Christian friends to this high experience?

We start by wanting it.

We are already moving in the right direction when we sincerely pray:

Purify our faith like gold;
All the dross of sin remove;
Melt our spirits down, and mould
Into thy perfect love.

The Importance of Family Bible Reading

One of the greatest blessings God has given us is His Word, the Bible. The Bible truly is the inspired word of God. When you read the Bible, it's as if you are reading words that God's hand penned just for you.

The Bible is a roadmap with information pertaining to every aspect of life. Not only does it teach us how to be productive Disciples, but it teaches us how to be a successful spouse, a loving parent, a good employee, and much more. In addition, the Bible gives us examples as well as instructions to make it easier for those of us who are 'slow learners' (i.e., more stubborn than the rest).

The Bible is the most unique and most wonderful manual on how to live the human life that has ever been written. But if we don't read the Bible and study it, we will never discover the inestimable riches it contains. Nor will we learn how to live as we were designed to live.

Family Bible reading offers a number of benefits. It's a tremendous way for families to bond together by reading, discussing and learning what scripture says about all facets of life. It's also essential for living a Christian life, for developing and growing your faith and for molding your beliefs. There is a multitude of stories and parables for building character and teaching morals, and lessons for living.

If you've ever been in church, you've certainly heard stories from the Bible. But the only way to know if those stories are true and really happened as the minister described is to read the stories for yourself. Knowing what the Bible really says makes us more faithful and powerful witnesses to God's grace in our lives. And it has a much stronger impact on non-believers we might hope to convince of the Truth of the scriptures.

The ability to direct others to verses of scripture that will encourage them or help them get through the trials of life only comes through our personal knowledge of God's Word. As does the ability to explain why Christians believe as we do. Both of these are important to a fruitful, successful Christian life.

Has anyone ever asked what Easter is all about? Or who Jesus claimed to be? Or why we think Jesus really is God's Son? The answer to these and many other questions about creation, honesty, integrity, marriage, parenthood and so much more can be found in the words. But you have to read those words to know that—and to be able to share them.

With the abundance of Bible reading guides and Bible study tools available, anyone can study and understand the Bible. Maybe you would enjoy keeping a journal or as you study the Word. That way, when you find a verse that speaks to your heart, you can make not of it and find it again, or share it with someone else who could use the same encouragement.

While some people say the language of the Bible is hard to read, that doesn't have to be the case any more. There are many wonderful, scholarly translations that can be trusted for their authenticity and that are much easier to read and understand than the traditional King James version.

There are even Bibles geared specifically to children that make it easy for them to understand the Word as well. And it's never too early to start reading the Bible to your child and teaching her to read it for herself. In fact, starting young makes it much easier to make daily Bible reading a habit that will last a lifetime. Teach your child principles of biblical living and how God wants them to live will give them strength to stand against false teachings and better discern what is true and false as they grow.

The adage that "knowledge is power" is a true one, and it applies very much to Bible reading. The more knowledge you and your family has about God's Word, the more strength and power you have to stand firm on what you believe, regardless of what situations you may face.

Four-year-old asks for sibling

Four-year-old Paul did not like being an only child.

“Lord,” prayed Paul, “could I please have a baby brother or a baby sister?”

“Sure,” replied the Lord. “In fact, I can tell you that you will have a baby sister named Priscilla, who will be born on your seventh birthday.”

“Thank you, Lord,” said Paul. “Thank you very much. I’ll try as hard as I can to be a good brother. I’ll help mom and dad take care of her.”

“I know you will,” God said. “And since older brothers sometimes need a helping hand, sometimes Priscilla will help your parents take care of you.”

“So Priscilla and I will pretty much look out for each other, right?,” asked Paul.

“That’s right, Paul,” said the Lord. “And I know that you’re only four years old, but you need to start praying for your mom and dad right away, because they will need all of those prayers, and I will hear all of them.”

Paul began praying for his mom, Paulette, and his dad, Peter, as well as his sister, who would be born in three years. And, just as He had promised, God heard all of Paul’s prayers. “Lord, you are so awesome!,” Paul exclaimed.

“Thanks for noticing, Paul,” said God. “Sometimes my children do not acknowledge my power in their lives.”

On Paul’s seventh birthday, the family went to the hospital where Priscilla was scheduled to be born. “I’ll be the best big brother in the world,” he promised his mom and dad.”

“I know you will, Son,” said Paulette. “The Lord showed your dad and me that you have been praying for a brother or sister. Thank you for praying for your sister and for us.”

At 11:30 p.m., little Priscilla was born. Paulette, Peter and Paul all held their new bundle of joy for a moment.

“Hi, little sister,” said Paul. “I’m so glad you’re here. When you’re a little older, I plan to take you fishing with me. I’ll even bait your hook for you until you learn to do it yourself.”

“Paul,” said Paulette. “Did you stop to think that she may be more interested in playing with dolls than she will be in fishing?”

“Yes, I did, Mom,” said Paul. “And I’ll make a deal with you. I’ll teach her all I know about fishing, if you’ll teach her everything you know about dolls!”

Mouse wants to become church mouse

Charlie, the Church Mouse Extraordinare at First Cheese Church, was very happy with his job, which paid him in cheese.

He earned enough cheese each week to feed his entire family, and he had enough cheese left over to give to the homeless mouse shelter.

Charlie’s job was very easy. He kept all the floors, pews, couches and chairs very clean, and he made sure all the visiting rodents enjoyed their time at the church.

Charlie felt his job was so easy, in fact, that he boasted to all his little mouse buddies, “Being a church mouse is fun, easy and fulfilling. I would advise any mouse to consider being a church mouse as a career option. It’s a great way to honor the God who created us.”

Cinnamon, Charlie’s best mouse friend, liked what he heard. “I’m kind of tired of cutting cheese at the Local Mouse Deli,” he told Charlie. “Do you think I could work as a church mouse intern at the church for a couple of weeks? I could gain some experience, and I could learn whether I was cut out for that type of work.”

“No problem,” said Charlie. “Your pay will be one-half pound of cheese per week. Plus, if you do a good job, I’ll give you a letter of recommendation that you can give to prospective employers.”

Like Charlie, Cinnamon thought the church mouse gig was a blast. “This is great,” Cinnamon said. “When can I get my letter of recommendation?”

“I’ll have it for you tomorrow,” Charlie replied.

In the letter, Charlie spoke very highly of Cinnamon’s job performance. “Cinnamon has a very strong work ethic, and he really enjoys his job,” Charlie wrote. “He would be a fine church mouse for any church.”

Christopher, the mouse resources officer at Second Cheese Church, was very impressed with the letter of recommendation, but he wanted to know why Cinnamon quit his job as a cheese cutter after being on the job for only three months. “That’s not a very long time to work at any job,” Christopher observed.

“It just wasn’t challenging enough, Sir,” said Cinnamon. “I became bored, so I decided to look for a job that provided a bit more adventure.”

Christopher remembered that in his younger days he also had dreamed of a job with more adventure. “Now,” he said, “I’m thankful for every slice of cheese I earn, and I just want the Lord to be pleased with my work ethic.”

“Come on, Cinnamon,” said Christopher, “What’s the real reason you wanted to change jobs?”

“There is one other reason,” Cinnamon admitted. “You see, all I did was slice cheese all day, and I got tired of being nothing but a cutup.”

Dating: Misery Loves Company

We're in the midst of a raging recession with global reach. The economists are speculating on the possibility of a "double dip" recession. People have lost jobs, homes, cars other property and the like, marriages are strained under the weight of mounting debts and other economic problems.

But there is one "industry' that is defying the economic gloom and doom and according to a report I heard about on Fox News, that would be the online matchmaking services. Some of the dating sites are reporting double digit increases in the number of new members. They describe the pace at which people are trying to find a new partner as "frenzied."

It seems that, despite the sometimes high monthly cost, people want to reach out to one another and be together. In other words, they don't want to go through this economic downturn by themselves.

Unfortunately, many of these people are lonely and not seeking a partner from a godly standpoint, as in seeking their lifelong soul-mate, partner, fellow worshiper, lover and co-parent. In fact, I believe many of these people are looking for someone to "hook up with." Some of them will marry after many years of getting to "know" each other, in the biblical sense, prior to marriage.

People are social creatures, they need to interact with other people. Despite the economy, people interviewed state the need to connect and not face all this uncertainty by themselves; but they also mention the advantage of having an almost unlimited number of potential partners to interact with so they can weed out the incompatible (the goldigger, psycho, etc.).

Through an online dating site, they have more information on a potential mate than they otherwise would meeting someone at work or from a chance encounter at the laundromat.

One can sympathize as these are lonely people who want companionship, and to share expenses in these difficult times. But it is better to be alone than to be with the wrong person. No matter how bad the economy is, a relationship started out of loneliness, desperation, or a desire to share expenses will not last in the long run.

Better to live on a corner of the roof than share a house with a quarrelsome wife (or husband). (Proverbs 21:9, NIV)

Woman keeps her faith after stroke

Geneva suffered a stroke three weeks before Labor Day, and she was determined to alter her lifestyle.

“I don’t want to have another stroke,” she told her husband, Garth.

Geneva began eating more fruits and vegetables, and she started walking about two miles every day.

Geneva suffered no major long-term effects from the stroke, and she was very grateful to the Lord for this blessing. “I’m still able to drive my car and teach my Sunday school class,” she said.

Geneva also continued shooting hoops with her son, Gabe, a couple of times each week. “You know, Mom, I think you shoot the basketball even better now than you did before,” Gabe said. “And you always were a good shooter.”

“Just be sure you remember this lesson, Son,” said Geneva. “Don’t ever let adverse situations keep you from doing your best for God or from living your life to its fullest.”

“You’re so smart, Mom,” said Gabe.

“Thank you, Son,” said Geneva. “That‘s very kind.”

“Mom, may I please ask you a question?,” asked Gabe.

“Sure, Son,” replied Geneva.

“The company where you work was closed for Labor Day,” said Gabe. “Why did they close?”

“Many companies close on Labor Day,” said Geneva, “to give their employees a well-deserved day of rest. It’s like an extra day of vacation. Some of us work so hard that we really need an extra day off work every once in a while.”

“I know what you mean, Mom,” said Gabe. “As a student, I appreciate it when fall break and spring break arrive every year.”

“I guess it’s kind of the same thing,” agreed Geneva.

Geneva told her son that another great thing about this year’s Labor Day holiday occurred after the holiday break. “When we went back to work on Tuesday, the company treated us to lunch at a great restaurant,” she said. “Then the company wrote a check for the same amount as the cost of the lunch and donated the money to the local orphanage.”

“It’s great to see that the Lord doesn’t take a holiday on Labor Day,” said Gabe.

“God never takes a day off,” said Garth. “He’s always on he job, and He’s always right on time when He answers prayer.”

“Dad, you’re as smart as mom,” said Gabe. “How did I manage to get parents who are so intelligent?”

“All I know is that is one blessing the Lord must have known you could handle,” said Geneva.

“It’s a great blessing,” said Gabe. “And since you had your stroke, I’ve come to a conclusion about something. I hope I never have a stroke. But if I do, I sure hope I maintain my trust in God as well as you have. He is in control of everything, and He deserves all of our praise.”

“Amen to that!,” said Garth.

“Amen!,” echoed Geneva. “Amen!”

Church gains a new member

Restaurant Manager came up with an idea to beef up the menu of the upscale restaurant she operated.

Restaurant Manager said diners could share their recipes in the following categories: Meat-and-Potatoes, Veggies, Breads and Desserts.

Four weeks later, Restaurant Manager chose the winning entries, which were added to the menu. Madylin’s Meat Loaf-and-Sweet Potatoes won in the Meat-and-Potatoes category.

Each winner received a certificate good for two free meals at the restaurant. All winners gave their certificates to community members, who were in the lower income levels.

All of those who received the certificates felt they had received a great blessing from the Lord. “The only places I can afford to eat are fast-food hamburger restaurants,” said MandiLu, who received Madylin’s certificate.

MandiLu went to the restaurant for her first free meal. While there, she asked to speak to Restaurant Manager. “This is a great restaurant,” said MandiLu. “I’m going to tell everyone about it.”

“Thank you very much,” said Restaurant Manager. “Word of mouth is our most effective form of advertising.

“While I’m here, I’d like to invite you to the church I attend,” said MandiLu. “Our pastor preaches that Jesus Christ is Lord and that He is the same yesterday, today and forever. The pastor tells us that it is the job of every Christian to tell others about Jesus’ love.”

“Your pastor preaches it like it is,” said Restaurant Manager.

The following Sunday, Restaurant Manager visited the church. Restaurant Manager was so impressed that at the end of the service she asked to become a member of the congregation. She told the pastor, “You preach the Word of God in a powerful and relevant way. I’d be proud to be a member here.”

“It’s my pleasure to welcome you as a new member,” said the pastor. “And to honor you and all of our other new members, we’re having a time of fellowship and refreshments after tonight’s service.”

During the time of fellowship, all of the new members were given an opportunity to share some thoughts with everyone.

“This is the most dynamic church in town as far as I’m concerned,” said Restaurant Manager. “It serves the best spiritual food in town. I’d also like to take just a moment to invite everyone to visit the restaurant I manage. I believe we serve the best-tasting meals in town. Once again, thanks for allowing me to become a member of this church.”

“It’s our pleasure to have you here,” said the pastor. “I believe you will be a great testimony to the Lord Jesus Christ, and that you will be a great asset to this church.

“And don’t forget…like I say in my sermons… ‘Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today and forever.’”

“That’s good preaching,” said Restaurant Manager. “And it’s one Bible truth that makes for a tasty spiritual dessert.”

Doctor writes unusual prescriptions

Candie LemunDrop was known by all her friends as a very sweet young lady.

Lately, however, Candie had begun exhibiting a few not-so-sweet qualities. At the beginning of each day, she was cheerful and happy. By the end of the day, however, she became irritable and short-tempered.

Candie worked in the office of her husband, Dr. Candy LemunDrop, whose passion was writing creative prescriptions.

“I recently noticed these late afternoon changes in my disposition,” Candie told Candii Lemindrop, a co-worker and her best friend.

“It’s so weird,” said Candie. “One minute, I’m happy and cheerful. The next minute, I feel like I’m my own worst enemy.”

“I have a bright idea,” said Candii. “I’ll set up an appointment for you to see your husband during office hours, that is unless you want to talk to him about it at home.”

“Oh, I couldn’t do that,” Candie said. “We don’t discuss anything at home that is remotely related to work.”

Candii made the appointment for Candie for the following Wednesday. While waiting to see her husband, Candie read several passages from the book of Psalms.

Candie read Psalms 66:1-3, “Make a joyful noise unto God, all ye lands: Sing forth the honour of his name: make his praise glorious. Say unto God, How terrible art thou in thy works! Through the greatness of thy power shall thine enemies submit themselves unto thee.”

A short time later, Candie walked into her husband’s office, kissed him on the cheek and said, “Hi, Honey. How is your day going?”

“It’s a great day!,” exclaimed Dr. Candy. “This is the day that the Lord has made. I will rejoice and be glad in it.”

“Most of my days start out okay,” said Candie, “but by the end of the day, I’m a miserable wreck.”

“You seem fine at home,” Dr. Candy observed.

“By the time I get home, all my work-related stress has disappeared,” Candie replied. “And you and I have such a good relationship that when I get home I’m feeling fine again.”

Dr. Candy asked his wife about any changes she may have made in her diet.

“You know that I made a decision to lose about 50 pounds,” Candie said. “For a while, I was eating a candy bar after every meal, but I decided not to do that any more.”

“Well, it looks like I’ve already solved your problem,” said Dr. Candy. “You stopped eating candy bars cold turkey, and you used up all your reserves of sweetness.”

“You’re going to write one of your unusual prescriptions for me aren’t you?,” asked Candy.

“I sure am, Sweetheart,” said Dr. Candy. “Don’t ever quit anything as important as candy bars cold turkey. Here’s your prescription. Before you go to bed tonight, eat two candy bars…then call me in the morning!”

Months debate their importance

Several of the months of the year held a conference to discuss their level of importance to the world.

Conference participants included January, April, June, September, November and December.

Since she felt so important because she was the first month, January mailed invitations to the months she wanted to attend the conference. She considered including all 12 months, but after giving the matter a few moments of not-so-serious thought, she decided against sending those invitations.

The conference began and, as expected, January was the first to offer reasons for being the most important month. “I’m first for a reason,” said January.

“I offer the first day of every new year,” she said. “I’m definitely the only month who is qualified to be first on the calendar.”

January introduced April with a not-so-friendly, “You’re all wet, but it’s your turn to speak.”

April approached the microphone, raindrops still running down her smiling face. “I only have a few words to say,” she said. “I may be crying on the outside, but I’m smiling brightly on the inside. I’m very sorry that May wasn’t invited to the conference, because she has the most beautiful flowers in the world.”

Full of energy from basking in the sun he provided, June proclaimed, “I’m the month who gives summer to the world. I’m definitely the best month in which to live.”

September felt a little depressed because he was so far down on the agenda. “I know I should be higher than ninth on the list of months,” he sighed. “After all, Labor Day is one of the most important holidays of the year. It’s the last major holiday before autumn officially arrives.”

“You think you’re important!,” snorted November. “I’m the month who offers Thanksgiving to the world. Plus, many people take a day off work to celebrate me.”

“Well, I don’t want to toot my own horn,” said December, who thought she was the prettiest month. “But it seems that since we celebrate the birth of the Lord Jesus Christ during my month, that I just might be the most important of the months. And don’t forget that I provide the last day of each year for a great New Year’s Eve celebration.”

“Maybe we should have invited all those other months to hear about their contributions to society,” said April.

“And maybe we shouldn’t have done that,” said January. “I don’t like too much competition.”

Sun, Moon and Stars had been listening to the heated discussion. Sun, the spokesman for the group, decided to shed some light on the conversation. “We are at least as important as you guys and gals,” he said. “Without us, you would always be in the dark!”

Second-graders tackle career choices

Faith, Felicia and Fairness were second graders who loved to play “make believe” about their future careers.

One afternoon, however, the young ladies met to plan their futures for real. They met in a city park so they could enjoy the nice cool breeze. Faith’s mom accompanied them to the park, which was about one block from the community in which they lived.

After spending about two hours talking over various options, they announced their decisions.

“I must go first!,” exclaimed Felicia. “I can’t wait another second to share my thoughts!”

Knowing Felicia’s continued insistence on being first among the trio to make a major announcement, Faith and Fairness agreed to her request.

“I’m going to be a waitress in a fancy restaurant,” said Felicia. “I like listening to the relaxing music they play, and I love meeting new people. I’ll earn lots of tips, so I’ll make enough money to support several missionaries.”

“Thanks for letting me go second,” said Fairness, who always enjoyed being in the middle of things.

“I’ve decided to work as an astronaut,” said Fairness. “I’m going to work on a contract basis as a corporate astronaut.”

“So instead of orbiting the earth for the government, you’ll be going around in circles for yourself,” said Faith.

“That’s a good way of putting it,” said Fairness. “Plus, I’ll make lots of money, and when I’m not flying, I’ll be able to earn millions of dollars as a public speaker.

“I plan to give most of that money to a charity that helps needy children. Plus, I’d like to build a bunch of new orphanages all over the world.”

“How about you, Faith?,” asked Felicia. “What’s tugging at the strings of your heart?”

“I want to be a missionary,” said Faith. “Every time a missionary comes to our church, I get so excited about the work they are doing…you know…helping sick and hungry children and telling them about Jesus Christ, digging wells so people in small villages can have clean water, and providing Bibles and other written materials for evangelism projects.”

Faith told her friends that she didn’t know in which country she wanted to serve. “I do know I’d like to visit China, Great Britain, and Liberia,” she said.

Faith, Fairness and Felicia then stood in a circle, clasped each other’s hands and prayed for God to direct their lives.

“Lead us by your Holy Spirit, so we will always do your will,” prayed Fairness. “In Jesus’ name. Amen.

Felicia then prayed the prayer. Her “Amen!” was so loud that she startled her friends.

“You shouldn’t pray so loudly,” joked Fairness. “We don’t want to offend anyone!”

Looking to the right, then to the left, Faith proclaimed, “There’s no one around except for a few birds and butterflies, and they’re smart enough not to be offended!”

Pastors discuss global warming

Two pastors, who had been close friends for many years, began meeting once each week to discuss local, regional, national and world issues.

Old-Fashioned Pastor and Contemporary Minister both loved the Lord, but they didn’t always see eye-to-eye on their topic of conversation.

The pastors decided to conduct a special two-week series on man-made global warming. Each church was scheduled to host one of the discussions.

The first discussion was held in Contemporary Minister’s church. “Thanks for hosting the first discussion in our two-part series,” said Old-Fashioned Pastor.

“I’m glad to do it,” said Contemporary Minister. “And thank you for hosting next week’s session.”

“Let’s get right into our conversation,” said Old-Fashioned Pastor. “You believe in the concept of man-made global warming, correct?”

“I most certainly do,” said Contemporary Minister. “Surely, you’ve noticed that this summer is the hottest summer on record in this community!”

“We have experienced a big heat wave over the last few weeks,” replied Old-Fashioned Pastor. “But that fact doesn’t prove that global warming is true. All it means is that we’re having a very hot summer.”

Old-Fashioned Pastor continued, “Now if the average temperature in this community increases by two or three degrees a year for the next 20 years, I would say that it was warmer here over a short period of time. For me, it still wouldn’t prove the idea of man-made global warming.”

“Many scientists are convinced that global warming is taking place,” said Contemporary Minister. “That’s the primary reason I agree with the concept.”

“Many scientists don’t go along with the theory, and I agree with those scientists,” countered Old-Fashioned Pastor.

The following week’s session was held in Old-Fashioned Pastor’s church. “The temperatures this week were even hotter than they were last week,” said Contemporary Minister. “What do you say to that?”

“It was so hot that although the central heat and air is working at my home, the temperature on the inside of the house was almost as hot as the outside temperature,” said Old-Fashioned Pastor. “But I just cannot go along with the concept of man-made global warming. I do, however, believe in the concept of God-made global warming.”

“What do you mean?,” asked Contemporary Minister.

Old-Fashioned Pastor replied, “Listen to the words of the book of Revelation, chapter 16: ‘And the fourth angel poured out his vial upon the sun; and power was given unto him to scorch men with fire. And men were scorched with great heat, and blasphemed the name of God, which hath power over these plagues: and they repented not to give him glory.’

“So it appears to me,” said Old-Fashioned-Pastor, “that global warming may be on the way, but I don’t think it will be anything that man will want to take the credit for!”

Couple prays for a son

Abbie and Arthur had been married for five years and they were praying for a son.

Abbie was trusting that the Lord would give her the desire of her heart. Thus far, however, she had not been able to conceive.

“Oh, God!,” she exclaimed. “Please hear my grieving spirit! Give me a son, and I will raise him to praise and glorify your name!”

Arthur also prayed to the Father, asking Him to allow his wife to bear a son. “Sovereign Lord!,” he cried, “I promise if you give us a son, I will be the best father I can be!”

About three months later, Abbie and Arthur visited a physician, who had great news for them. “In a few months, you two will become parents,” said the doctor.

The physician, Dr. Babee Deliverer, also had a surprise for the happy couple. “It seems that the Lord is blessing you with four sons!,” he said.

“Four sons!” exclaimed Abbie. “Now that is a surprise, I was pretty sure I was expecting, but I wasn’t anticipating so much of a blessing. Thanks for the good news, Doctor.”

“Yes, Doctor, thanks for bearing the glad tidings,” said Arthur. “We may even name one of the boys after you.”

“It would be a huge honor for me if you gave them Biblical names like Adam, Moses, Matthew and Paul,” said the doctor.

After Abbie and Arthur left Dr. Babee Deliverer’s office, they returned home, enjoyed a quiet dinner, then went for a walk in a nearby park. The couple walked over several scenic trails.

“This park is certainly quiet,” observed Arthur. “The only sounds I hear are the rustling of the wind through the trees and the cheerful singing of the birds.”

The tranquility was interrupted by a loud, “Hi, Mom! Hi, Dad! I’m Matthew, your son. Thanks for bringing my brothers and me to this fantastic park. It’s so peaceful. Adam, Moses and Paul can’t talk to you yet, but I thought I’d pop up for a little chat.”

“This conversation certainly is a pleasant surprise,” said Arthur. “Your mom and I both prayed for a son, but it was a real shock when we learned four of you guys were on the way.”

“Very true,” said Abbie. “But I’m just thinking…if all four of you are hungry at the same time, I won’t know which of you to feed first.”

“I’ll help you make that decision, Mom,” said Matthew. “I am now putting in an official request to get my bottle first.”

“OK, Punkin,’” said Abbie. “But I still have one unanswered question. We prayed for one boy, but the Sovereign Lord is blessing us with four.”

“That’s easy, Mom,” said Matthew. “When you pray to God with a special request, sometimes you get much more than you bargain for!”

Pastor-Teacher conducts seminar on the Last Days

Pastor-Teacher decided to conduct a prophecy seminar in his hometown on the Last Days.

“If it catches on, I may promote it nationwide,” he said. “The Last Days is a very important topic.”

Pastor-Teacher asked PR Volunteer to give away free tickets to the seminar. Due to the great interest in the seminars, Pastor-Teacher rented Local Community Building in which to conduct the event. The building, which had a seating capacity of 2,000 people, was used for a variety of purposes, including funerals, weddings, birthday parties and Christian worship services.

On the day of the event, Pastor-Teacher realized that all 2,000 seminar tickets had been distributed, and requests for 4,000 additional tickets had been received. He contacted local TV Station and Local Radio Station, both of which agreed to air the seminar.

Local Newspaper Reporter also attended the seminar to record Pastor-Teacher’s comments and write a front-page story for the following day’s paper.

All members of the media positioned themselves in such a way that they would be able to report accurately everything that happened during the seminar.

Pastor-Teacher began the seminar by quoting Revelation 1:3-8:

is he that readeth, and they that hear the words of this prophecy, and keep those things which are written therein: for the time is at hand.

"John to the seven churches which are in Asia: Grace be unto you, and peace, from him which is, and which was, and which is to come; and from the seven Spirits which are before his throne;

"And from Jesus Christ, who is the faithful witness, and the first begotten of the dead, and the prince of the kings of the earth. Unto him that loved us, and washed us from our sins in his own blood,

"And hath made us kings and priests unto God and his Father; to him be glory and dominion for ever and ever. Amen.

"Behold, he cometh with clouds; and every eye shall see him, and they also which pierced him: and all kindreds of the earth shall wail because of him. Even so, Amen.

"I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the ending, saith the Lord, which is, and which was, and which is to come, the Almighty.”

“Does anyone have anything to say before we continue with tonight’s lesson?,” asked Pastor-Teacher.

“I do,” spoke up Seminar Attendee. “I had a Revelation Moment at my home earlier this week. We only have one clock in the house, and for some reason it stopped running at 2 a.m. I’ve been studying about the cessation of time and the beginning of eternity. When I awoke at 7 a.m. and saw that the clock had stopped several hours before, I thought eternity had already begun!”

New airline promotes Christian ministry

Brand New Airlines of the Christian Faith offered in-flight chapel services on all its flights.

The airline’s chaplain, Pastor Carl, continuously exhibited a positive attitude. “I like to live with my head above the clouds,” he joked.

Pastor Carl faithfully conducted worship services aboard the airline’s No. 1 Airplane every Saturday and Sunday. “You don’t have to miss out on worshipping God in church just because it’s the weekend,” he said.

Pastor Carl used a variety of tools to illustrate his messages. One Saturday, several passengers were asked to compose and recite short poems about their relationship with Jesus Christ. The following day, he asked passengers to share a few brief testimonies.

Pastor Carl used the airplane’s take-off and landing processes to describe the mountains and valleys of life. “Each of us experiences life’s highs and lows,” he observed. “But through all of our joys and trials, the Lord Jesus Christ is with us.”

One weekend, Pastor Carl was sick, so he asked his assistant chaplain, Pastor Cornett, to share God’s Word with the passengers. “I would be thrilled to fill in for you,” said Pastor Cornett in a phone call from Pastor Carl. “I look forward to flying again. I haven’t flown for many years. Do you have any tips about in-flight ministry that you can share with me?”

“Well, let’s see,” said Pastor Carl. “You must remember that you are ministering to people of varying faith backgrounds. You must share the love of the Lord with all passengers, giving an equal opportunity to each of them to hear about God’s mercy and love.”

“No problem,” said Pastor Cornett. “That’s the approach I use with every sermon I preach at the church where I serve as the pastor. And my associate minister, Pastor Charlie, looks at ministry the same way that I do. He realizes the importance of everyone having an opportunity to hear about how much Jesus loves them.”

Pastor Cornett told Pastor Carl that Pastor Charlie believed adults should be ministered to in a way that even children can understand. “Pastor Charlie uses puppets, kids songs and other tools from which both children and adults can benefit,” Pastor Cornett said.

“The only problem with me filling in for you is that Pastor Charlie’s wife, Sister Charlotte, has to work. You see, Sister Charlotte plays the piano for Pastor Charlie when he conducts the services. She works as a flight attendant for Brand New Airlines of the Christian faith.

“Pastor Charlie has a tendency to become really excited when he is ministering, and Sister Charlotte helps calm him down. With Sister Charlotte up-in-the-air in her role as a flight attendant, when Pastor Charlie’s excitement begins to rise, no one will be there to bring him back down to earth!”

Caboose knows his job

Christian Locomotive was the leader of a train which included himself, Christian Boxcar and Christian Caboose.

Locomotive, who had a very outgoing personality, was glad Boxcar and Caboose had elected him to be the train’s illustrious leader, and he wanted to take advantage of the opportunity because he truly wanted to serve the community and the country.

“The view is great from this vantage point,” smiled Locomotive. “But the most important thing about being chosen for this position is that I bring glory to God and serve others.

“You always wanted to be a leader, Locomotive, so when I asked for my two weeks vacation, I asked if I could switch places with you in exchange for a free tour of the country,” said Boxcar. “And I must say I have forgotten how beautiful the view was from this part of the train.

“The trees have a more normal look to them, the view of the rivers is much better, and I don’t make nearly as much noise as I did when I was Locomotive. And I can take advantage of this opportunity to renew my friendship with Caboose. We were best friends when we started working for the railroad about 20 years ago, but when I was the Number One Boxcar behind Locomotive I didn’t get to talk with him very much, because there was too much distance between us.”

“It sure is great catching up on old times,” said Caboose. “I had forgotten about how much fun it was collaborating with you on writing songs about the railroad. I wrote the words, and you composed the music…We even competed with other trains around the nation and won first place in a songwriting contest…Yes, those were the good old days.”

Locomotive was curious about the aspect of being Locomotive that Boxcar missed the most. “I miss being a leader,” replied Boxcar. “You know, people looking up to me and respecting me, kids beaming with pride when I first came into view, feeling the surge of power when I was given more fuel.”

“I think you have the meaning of leadership all wrong,” said Locomotive. “Leadership isn’t about the feelings you get when people look at you, the self-esteem that you may experience, or the surge of power you get from the extra fuel.

“It’s about serving the people who are riding the train, making sure that they reach their destination comfortably and safely, and taking care of their needs while they are in our care. You agree, don’t you, Caboose?”

Caboose had fallen asleep for a few seconds, and he awoke just in time to hear Locomotive’s question. “You’re right, of course,” said Caboose. “But for me, it’s like vacation all the time, because some people say I’m just along for the ride!”

Celebrate freedom on Independence Day

Grover loved America with all his heart.

“Thank you, Lord, for allowing me to live in the U.S.A.,” said Grover, who worked as a truck driver.

Grover’s wife, Ginnie, also was very thankful for living in America. “This is the best country in the world,” she told Grover.

Ginnie was enjoying her summer break from her teaching job. Grover and Ginnie planned an Independence Day celebration at their home and invited several friends to share the occasion with them.

Two of Grover’s co-workers, Garth and Genevieve, responded to the invitation with a resounding, “We wouldn’t miss it for the world!”

Georgia, Ginnie’s best friend at work, was also quick to respond affirmatively to the invitation. “I can’t wait for this celebration,” Georgia e-mailed Ginnie. Would you like for me to bring anything?”

Ginnie replied, “If you like, you can bring a CD of your favorite Christian singer.”

The big day arrived and, after talking for a little while, everyone gathered in the kitchen for lunch.

“The hamburgers were super,” said Georgia.

“And the hotdogs were the best I’ve ever tasted,” said Genevieve. “The fresh garlic slices were the perfect added touch.”

“My favorite part of the meal was that scrumptious homemade potato salad,” grinned Garth. “I never would have thought about adding fresh beets, green beans and whole-grain bread crumbs. Nice touch!”

“Thanks for the compliments,” said Ginnie. “Now I think it’s about time for us to listen to some good Christian patriotic music.”

Ginnie, Grover and their guests walked to the den, and Ginnie inserted Georgia’s CD into the CD player. The vibrant female voice filled the room with sounds of faith in God, freedom in America and the fact that Jesus is the giver of true freedom.

After the final song was played, feelings of patriotism and faith were running high. “I’ve always been proud of America, and our time here today has re-enforced those feelings,” said Garth. “And I thank God more than ever for giving us spiritual freedom in the Lord Jesus Christ and for giving us the freedom to worship Him here in America.

“Those songs have helped me to realize more fully the need for Jesus Christ to offer himself as a sacrifice for our sin,” said Genevieve. “And we should always remember the sacrifices of those in America’s Armed Forces who fought and died to keep our country free.”

“Oh, I have one question for you, Georgia,” said Ginnie. “I asked you to bring a CD of music by your favorite Christian singer, but the singer on the CD sounded a lot like you.”

“Well, Ginnie, it was me,” laughed Georgia. “I am my favorite singer. My mom and dad say I can sing better than anyone they know. And my parents are the best judges of music that I know!”

Bible memorization contest draws unenthusiastic response

Pastor Wanna Noe Bible felt his church needed a deeper knowledge of God's Word, so he decided to implement a month-long contest to test the congregation's desire to memorize Bible verses.

Pastor Bible promoted the contest for about one month. He announced the project on the church‘s Web site, purchased newspaper advertising, and ran announcements in the church's weekly bulletin.

Although response from the pre-contest publicity was dismal, Pastor Bible was not upset. “I realize people deal with many things on a day-to-day basic,” he told his wife, Mrs. Bible. “And I'm sure the folks realize the importance of knowing God's Word.”

Members of the congregation were asked to approach the pastor and volunteer for the project. Two weeks into the project, however, no one had contacted him, so the pastor decided to again appeal for participation.

“This will give you an opportunity to memorize the Word of God, and you'll be a much more effective witness for the Lord,” he said.

The following Sunday, the pastor called for a special meeting to be held in the church's fellowship hall after the morning worship service. He asked why no one in the congregation had responded to the call for Scripture memorization.

“I've been so busy at work,” said Bonnie. “I've had to work overtime every single day for the past month.”

“My time has been spent planning our family vacation,” said Buster. “I'm trying to make sure we get the best prices on motel rooms and restaurant discounts. Plus, I've checked the price of gasoline every day on the Internet. And I've also been working very hard on my job.”

“I'm in the process of starting a new business, and I'm trying to make sure I have all the proper licenses, select a good location and stock my new store with a great variety of merchandise,” said Bowman.

Pastor Wanna Noe Bible was discouraged by the reasons given by the members for not memorizing Bible verses. “I wish they would realize the importance of hiding God's Word away in their hearts,” he thought.

To the members of the church, the pastor said, “We still have one more week in the contest. I urge you to learn as many Bible verses as you can in the next seven days.”

The last Sunday in the contest arrived, and the pastor planned to announce that no Bible verses had been memorized. As he stood to make the announcement, Barbara raised her hand to get the pastor's attention.

“I memorized one verse,” Barbara said.

“What verse did you memorize?,” asked the pastor.

“John 11:35,” replied Barbara. “The reason it took me so long to memorize the verse was because it was so short that I almost didn't find it!”
